The Saddlebrook Resort Offers More Than Just Tennis

Saddlebrook: 5th hole

The 5th hole is a short par 4. An accurate tee shot is a must. Leave short of water for second shot to multi-level green.

Although perhaps better known for its tennis academy, Tampa‘s Saddlebrook Resort also offers access to two Palmer designed golf courses: The Palmer and Saddlebrook courses.  We played the Palmer course  offering four sets of tees ranging from just over 6600 yards to just under 5200 yards.  The fairways were generous to the tee shots for the most part  but can leave you side hill stances due to rolling and undulated fairways.  They have yardage markers that help with your distance to the green which has 4 different pin positions. The greens are large enough for your second and third shots but are multi-leveled which can lead to some tough putting if you’re not on the same area of the green as the pin.

The  course was well maintained from tee to green and the conditions were very good.  The contoured fairways had been nicely cut as well as the tee boxes.  The greens were also in good shape.  The price for play on this Saturday afternoon was $37 plus tax.  Weekend morning prices fall at 11am and this is a good price if you can stand the hot Florida afternoons. We tee’d off  just after noon and was able to play in just over 4 hours despite letting a twosome play through and a 20 minute rain delay on the backside.

The staff was very friendly as you checked in and provided free shuttle service to and from your car to the pro shop.  The one down side is the location of the driving range.  It is located just when you enter Saddlebrook, so if you want to hit range balls either do it when you drive in, or go out the back in your cart after you check in.  They do have a small putting green up by the first tee.  The carts didn’t have GPS but were equipped with coolers and ice, and drinking water was available on several holes through out the course.

The Saddlebrook  Resort is located just 30 minutes from downtown Tampa  at I-75 and SR 54, 1 mile east of the interstate.  As a resort, they offer a full range of amenities including stay and play packages. For more information visit
