The Links of Lake Bernadette was Worth the Drive

Links of Lake Bernadette: Par 5, 15th hole

The 15th has sand down the right, but with an open fairway a good straight drive could get you to the green in 2.

I’ve played the Links of Lake Bernadette golf course several times and it’s not always been in the best condition.  This generally prevented me from making the drive to this course which is a little out-of-the-way.  However, overall the course was in very good shape from tee to green.  Fairways were mown and the greens were running true.  Compared to last week at Lexington Oaks, these greens seemed a little slow but that could just be my perception.

The few extra minutes driving will be worth it for anyone on a budget.  Rates vary from $32 for an early morning tee time on a weekend to $10 any day after 5 pm.  I played at 1:50 pm on a Thursday afternoon and it cost $20 plus tax. This is an absolute bargain for the area.

In spite of the name, this is not a links course.  All the holes on this course are different with their own personality and are even named on the score card.  Some holes are wide, some are narrow, some have trouble, and some don’t.  Each challenges the player to pull a different shot from their bag.  This course is fairly short playing at 6500 yards from the blues to just over 5000 yards from the reds.  The fun here is not the length, but the variety of shots you can play.

The afternoon I played was not very busy and as a single I zipped around the course in under 3 hours.  Weekend play will probably be slower.

The staff members I met were friendly and accommodating.  There were two practice greens but no driving range so if you get there early to warm up, you will only be putting and chipping.  There is no GPS in the carts but they did have complimentary yardage books that map the holes, lists the yardage and even tells you a little about each hole.

Lake Bernadette is located 7 miles east of I75 on SR54 which is about a half hour from downtown Tampa.  For more information, visit their website at www.linksoflakebernadette.com.
