I do a lot golfing, but I don’t do a lot of practicing. Sure, when I get to the course I’ll hit a few balls from a friend’s bucket to loosen up, or to just see how far ‘off’ or ‘on’ my game will be. Sometimes I won’t practice at all if the course doesn’t have a range. Needless to say, I haven’t been to a dedicated practice facility in years. So, to practice some shots that are giving me trouble on the course, last week I went to the Tampa Bay Downs Practice Facility to hit some golf balls.

Usually known for horse racing, Tampa Bay Downs is also home to a pretty good golf practice facility to work the kinks out in your game.  There are over 40 hitting areas that were in good shape. You could tell that they move the hitting stations around so you won’t be hitting from dirt. It also has covered teeing areas so you can stay in the shade on hot, sunny days (or out of the rain). There are also two greens for chipping and sand practice, as well as a large practice putting green which was in good condition. I did notice that the sand traps were a little rough due to all the rain we have recieved, but I still was able to hit several golf balls from the sand to practice my bunker play.

They have three prices for the range balls - Pony, Quarterhorse, and Thoroughbred that run $5.50-$11.50 and you get between 40-120 balls depending on the horse you choose.  Lessons are also available. The Downs is a lighted facility so you can get out after work or go in the evenings to avoid the heat. There is a nice Pro Shop that comes complete with a video betting terminal just to remind you that you are at the horse track.

The Downs Practice Facility is a good place to work on those trouble shots or to shake the rust off your game if you haven’t played in a while. If you visit between December and the begining of May, you can combine your practice with some live thoroughbred racing or maybe a game of poker in their poker room.  The Downs is located on Racetrack Road in Oldsmar Florida, about a half hour from downtown Tampa.
