Golfing TPC Tampa Bay Provides Pro-Like Experience

TPC Tampa Bay: 2nd hole

The 2nd hole is a medium-to-long par 3 with sand short right before multi-leved green. Choose club wisely.

TPC Tampa Bay is widely considered the best public access golf course in the Tampa Bay area.  Home to the annual Champions Tour Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, I’m always excited to play this course as it’s a true test of skill and provides the average Joe Golfer with a PGA-like experience.  Although because of the challenging nature of the course, your scores will probably indicate differently.  The entire experience makes you feel like you have a PGA tour card for the day and it’s always fun to check out the locker room where pro golfers names are displayed on their lockers.

Because of its impeccable pedigree, the prices are quite a bit higher than average for the area.  Expect to pay from $60 – $100 for a round of golf during the low season depending on the day and time with prices jumping to $150 per round in the high season.  Check their website to find a tee time that will maximize your dollars.

TPC has 5 difrerent tee’s ranging from just under 6900 yards to 5000 yards.  The score card has tee recommendation’s based on your handicap and I definitely would choose the  tee’s that best fit you so you can limit frustration and enjoy your round.  Although a relatively flat course, many of the greens have considerable drop-offs so a missed shot will have you chipping back on.  Strategically located bunkers and water hazards add to the difficulty off the tee and for second shots.

Being a TPC course that hosts a Champions Tour event, you expect  it to in top notch condition and it was.  The course conditions were absolutely perfect.  The sand traps were immaculately raked from fairways to greenside bunkers.  The tee boxes and fairways had been cut with military precision and putting the true and fast greens gave me an idea of how the pros feel while putting during tournament play.  Even though it had rained the previous evening, the greens were still really quick.  The pace of play was pretty decent as well.  We played early Tuesday morning and three of us got through the round in just over 3 and half hours.

The staff at the pro shop was friendly and helpful with the day’s course rules and pin position.  After checking in we found our clubs in the cart along with a bag of range balls.  The driving range has different teeing areas with yardage to several small greens which is great way to guage your club yardage.  There is also an area to practice sand play and chipping near the first tee.  The carts are new, however they don’t have GPS.  This is made up for somewhat by yardage markers throughout the course located in the sprinkler heads.

Located in Lutz just off Lutz Lake Fern road, TPC Tampa Bay is a quick drive from downtown Tampa reachable via the Veterans Expressway.  For more details visit www.tpctampabay.com.
