The Eagles: Lakes Course 1st hole

The 1st hole is a par 4. Not too long with trees on right. A good tee shot will carry trees. Watch for trees guarding green on 2nd shot.

Back in July of last year, I had a disappointing round at The Eagles Golf Club of Tampa Bay. After the round, a staff member told us that The Eagles was undergoing a management transition and the courses were going to be reconditioned (see Condition Update: The Eagles Golf Course).

I recently heard that conditions had gotten better so this past weekend I went out to give it a try. We played the Lakes Course which was in good condition with well maintained tees and fairways. The greens were also in good shape, except for one or two around the edges. The sand traps were all in nice condition and the rough was manageable. The Lakes course is the longer of the two courses at The Eagles. It boasts 4 sets of tees ranging from just under 7100 yards from the back to just under 5400 from the reds.  The length, as well as strategically placed trees and water can all come into play, making this a challenge from any tee. Though some holes are not real long,  good shot decisions are required on the majority of holes.

The staff was friendly and treated us well. After checking in, our bags were put on our cart for us. The carts were new and featured an ice-filled cooler with two bottles of water. No GPS though. We headed towards the driving range, which is an aqua range, and putting green to loosen up. Even the driving range was in a lot better condition than my previous visit.

The price for the weekend morning was $45 plus tax and is about right for winter play and for the course. We had a foursome and were able to get through 18 holes in just under four hours.

The Eagles Golf Club under new management is definitely moving in the right direction and is worth taking a look. Located in Odessa, the Club is about a 15 – 20 minute drive from Tampa International Airport. For more information and tee times check
